INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TUX

Ancient Roots and Settlement

  • Prehistoric Presence: Archaeological findings indicate that the Tux Valley was traversed as early as the Middle Stone Age. The first permanent settlers were likely the Breonen, a Raetian tribe from the Wipptal region.
  • Medieval Developments: In 889, the Tux Valley became part of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The name “Tux” (originally “Tukches”) was first documented in 1280, likely derived from the Indo-European root teg, meaning “to flow” or “to melt,” referencing the valley’s waterways.

Mining Heritage

  • Magnesite Mining: From 1927 to 1976, the Tux Valley was home to Europe’s highest magnesite mine, located near Vorderlanersbach. The operation included a dedicated workers’ settlement with amenities such as a chapel, school, and cinema. Today, remnants like the Barbara Chapel and some building foundations remain as historical markers.

Alpine Traditions

  • Stoankasern Dairy: Situated at 1,984 meters above sea level, this alpine dairy near Juns continues the tradition of producing butter and cheese using age-old methods. Visitors can witness the cheesemaking process during summer months, offering a glimpse into Tyrolean pastoral life.
  • Tux Mill (Tuxer Mühle): Dating back to 1839, this historic mill between Juns and Madseit provides insights into the valley’s agricultural past and is accessible to visitors interested in rural history.

Glacial Wonders

  • Hintertux Glacier: This glacier is one of the few worldwide offering year-round skiing. It features attractions like the Natural Ice Palace, a crevasse accessible to visitors, and the Spannagel Cave, the largest cave system in the Austrian Central Alps.

Cultural Narratives

  • Tuxer Bötinnen: Before modern roads, women known as “Bötinnen” played a crucial role in transporting goods and mail across the valley. Filomena Fankhauser, active from the late 19th to early 20th century, is a notable figure among them, remembered for her dedication over four decades.
